Biography

Tarabu is a dynamic Jazz and World Music trio from the Cape Winelands of South Africa. Tarabu features Francois le Roux (saxophones & clarinets), Philip Malan (guitars) and Lucas Heinen (piano accordion & piano). For larger events, special guests are featured on bass, drums and voice. The word “tarabu” is Swahili and, depending on the context, it translates in English to “joy”, “concert” or “instrumental music”.

All three musicians are highly accomplished performers and composers, each in their own right, and as a band they aim to fuse some of the essential elements of Jazz and World Music. For their original and cover music they draw inspiration from a wide variety of music genres, such as most styles of Jazz, finger-style acoustic guitar music, Waltzes, Tangos, Funk, the Blues, Folk music from the Middle-East and Europe, as well as some popular styles. Improvisation, creativity and skill are a few of the key ingredients in this mix

After the release of their debut album "Journey To The Unexpected" (1 November 2013), Tarabu has featured regularly at the top of the South African Jazz and World Music charts on NumberOneMusic.com and Reverbnation.com.

Tarabu's extensive repertoire includes a large variety of Jazz Standards, Tangos, and other World Music covers and arrangements, plus originals such as Moonrise, Cape To Cuba, Street Cafe, Journey To The Unexpected, Kippah, Arusha Blues, Gypsy Jam, Tuesday's Tango, Festival De Langostas, Istanbul, Cellar Blues and Waltz for Abby.

Besides many private functions and weddings, Tarabu has performed at the following notable events and venues:

  • Kyknet Silwerskermfees, 2014, Cape Town;
  • Rooiberg Winery 50th Birthday Celebration, 2015, Robertson;

Client Feedback

"Tarabu were a fantastic complement to our black tie wedding reception, adding plenty of class and a great vibe with their tasteful repertoire.  We opted for the jazz quartet which played during sun downer cocktails and it was really wonderful, with many of the guests commenting on the band.  It was exactly what we had hoped for, the music was great, and we would certainly recommend them. It was a breeze to set up the appointment and coordinate with Tarabu beforehand." (Aruna Ramsamy)

Client Feedback

The talented Tarabu entertained customers with the soothing sounds of an accordion, saxophone and guitar at The Sanctuary Shopping Centre in Somerset West over the Festive Season. The pleasant setting with a variety of restaurants on a wooden deck overlooking a lake was perfected by the wide variety of music genres they performed. Their professional demeanour was commendable from start to finish.
