Ryan, a born and bred Captonian, is the quintessential ‘Average Joe’. He owns a media sales operation and has a loving family. Yet, when not in the office, Ryan and his small like-minded extremist friends, quietly travel the world in search of its most inhospitable, often treacherous, icy ocean waters. Following painful, pioneering training techniques and using what limited resources he can find to put basic safety procedures in place, Ryan challenge himself by pushing personal limits for swimming in ice water, and often set new benchmarks for human endurance. No wetsuits or protection from the cold water – Speedos only.

Ryan's adventures, world first achievements and the often death-defying circumstances, make for brilliant tales of human spirit and victory.

Founding member of the now widely recognised and globally adopted International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) and as a Trustee of the SEAL Open Water Swimming Trust (with Ram Barkai & Ryk Neethling), Ryan uses his ‘reluctant’ platform to raise funds for the trust and to help put a curb to the unacceptably high rate of drownings in SA’s disadvantaged communities.

Antarctica Keynote:

As the founding members of the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA), Ryan and his team wanted to achieve an official world first Ice Mile south of the Antarctic Circle.

As one of the three who completed the challenge, out of the six making the attempt, the lessons learned from pushing himself so far beyond what nearly everyone believed to be impossible, have helped Ryan to understand the power of the human mind and it’s propensity to hold us back.

The psychological anxiety from the Leopard Seals the team stood to encounter on this challenge, on top of an impossible distance in minus 1°C water, made this a pivotal challenge for Ryan, and the focus of his primary keynote talk.

Ryan takes his audiences on a journey with him. Through story telling and strong visuals, he illustrates just how limited and governed we all are, in every aspect of our lives, by believing in our own limitations. How we under achieve in our comfort zones and how each and everyone of us can push past impossible.
